Welcome to Reading Without Borders
Reading Without Borders: Why is it so important?
This site, Reading Without Borders, showcases various works of Young Adult literature written by authors from outside of the United States. It is my hope that this website will help accomplish the following:
- Provide a new awareness of “stories of the other” to students and teachers by featuring books written by non-US Americans
- Equip teachers with a variety of rich textual experiences to provide points of contrast/comparison to more commonly-read school texts (which are often stories of native-born US Americans or of immigration to the United States/to a new way of life in the US)
- Serve to decrease Chimamanda Adichie’s “Danger of the Single Story” by exposing young people to characters and authors from other cultures, histories, and ways of life
